Professional Visitation
Professional visitation refers to visits by court officers or criminal justice personnel. A private contact space is provided, with no barrier between visitor and inmate.
Rules for All Professional Visitors
- No family members or personal friends of an inmate may accompany a professional visitor during a contact visit.
- Do not give the inmate articles containing staples or other metal objects.
- Do not let an inmate keep pencils or pens.
- Do not bring food, money, cigarettes, or drugs.
- All legal material left with an inmate must be inspected by staff.
- No items may be given to an inmate without staff authorization. Legal material requires inspection only.
- No weapons in the security area.
- No photographs of inmates.
- Cell phones and electronic devices may not be brought into the security area without pre-approval from the Deputy Superintendent.
- You and your possessions are subject to search before entering the security area.
- Follow the directions of jail staff and leave when instructed.
- Introduction of contraband may result in criminal and/or civil prosecution.
- Contact visits may continue during headcount, but visitors cannot leave the visitation room until the count clears.
Attorney Visitation
Scheduling a Contact Visit
Contact attorney visitation is conducted by appointment only. Schedule at least 24 hours in advance.

- Day of visit: call 804-250-1750, or use the Inmate Roster on this website, to verify your client is still at the facility.
On-site non-contact visits do not require an appointment or 24-hour advance notice. Weekend contact visits must be scheduled by end of business Friday. Non-contact visits are honored without an appointment on weekends.
Visitation Hours
- 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
- 1:30 to 4:00 p.m.
- 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Attorney-Client Phone Contact
Call 804-333-6419, ext. 5005, Monday through Friday during business hours. Leave your name, Bar Association Number, client’s name, call time, and callback number. Once verified, the attorney number will be secured from recording.
Providing Discovery for Inmate Review
- Email Luis Bermudez at lbermudez@nnrj.state.va.us and include the inmate name and your request.
- Your status as attorney-of-record will be confirmed.
- You will be asked to mail discovery in preferred formats: thumb drives, discs, or external hard drives. Laptops are not accepted.
- Paper discovery over 500 pages is accepted on a case-by-case basis. Notify the facility beforehand.

Video Visitation for Attorneys (Remote)
Secure attorney/client video visits are available via PC or smartphone with a webcam. This service is free for professionals. Register at Securus.
Schedule at least one day in advance. Available daily:
- 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
- 1:00 to 4:30 p.m.
- 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Video visits are not recorded and not monitored by staff. A log is created showing who visited, when, the length, and the status.
Attorney Assistants (Defense Team Members)
An attorney may bring investigators, interpreters, paralegals, or stenographers. Requirements:
- Submit a signed letter on attorney letterhead including the assistant’s name and function, the date of visit, the attorney’s assurance that the assistant has no personal relationship to the inmate, and the attorney’s signature.
- Provide a letter to NNRJ at least one business day before the visit.
- The assistant must present valid photo ID at the time of the visit.
- Limit assistants to those absolutely necessary.
Note: A letter is not required for interpreters on the Certified List for Virginia Courts.
