FOIA & Information Requests
Northern Neck Regional Jail is a public body under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act. You have the right to inspect or receive copies of most public records the jail keeps. This page explains how to make a request, how long it takes, and what it may cost.

How to submit a request
You do not have to explain why you want the records. A clear, specific request helps us respond faster, so please tell us what you are looking for and how to reach you.
What to include
- Your name and a way to reach you, such as an email address or phone number.
- A description of the records you want, with dates or names if you know them.
- Whether you want to inspect the records in person or receive copies.

- In person at 3908 Richmond Road, Warsaw, during office hours.
Response time
By law we will respond within 5 working days of receiving your request. If we need more time, we may take up to 7 additional working days, for a total of 12, and we will tell you in writing why the extra time is needed.
A response will do one of the following:
- Provide the records you asked for.
- Withhold some or all of the records, and tell you which exemption applies.
- Tell you the records do not exist or are not held by the jail.
- Tell you that more time is needed, within the limits above.
Fees and costs
We may charge for the actual cost of responding. That can include staff time to search for and prepare the records and the cost of copies. We do not charge more than what the work actually costs.
If the cost is likely to be significant we will give you an estimate before we begin, and you may narrow your request to lower the cost.
Records we cannot release
Some records are exempt from release under Virginia FOIA. These can include certain personnel, medical, security, and active investigation records. If we withhold a record, we will tell you which exemption allows us to do so. We will still release any part of a record that is not exempt.
