Family & Inmate Services

Everything families and friends need to stay in touch with someone at Northern Neck Regional Jail. Choose a topic below for visiting, mail, phone calls, money, and more. If you cannot find an answer, contact us and we will help.

Family Visitation

Staying connected matters. Family and friend visits at NNRJ are by video only; in-person visitation is not offered. Read the steps below before your first visit so you know how to register and what to expect.

What you need to know

  • Visit types: All visits are by video, either onsite or at home.
  • Schedule: Visit time availability is confirmed when you schedule an onsite visit. Offsite video visits are started by the person in custody.
  • Register: Online in advance.

How to schedule a visit

  1. Create a visitor account with the visitation provider, Securus (opens an external website).
  2. Request a visit time at least 24 hours ahead and wait for it to be approved.
  3. Sign in a few minutes early for your scheduled time, on a device or at the lobby kiosk.

Rules for visitors

  • All visitors must be on the approved visitor list.
  • Dress modestly. Visits may be ended for inappropriate clothing or conduct.
  • Children are welcome but must stay with a supervising adult at all times.

Inmate Mail

Letters mean a lot. You can write to someone in custody by regular mail. Use the exact address below and follow the rules so your mail is not delayed or returned.

Inmate mail goes to Tampa, not the jail. Personal mail is processed by the Securus Digital Mail Center in Tampa, FL. Use the exact address below. Legal mail and money orders go to their own box at the jail, which is different again. Both addresses are shown below.

Inmate mail address

Inmate’s Name and Jail Jacket #

Northern Neck Regional Jail, VA, C/O Securus DMC

P.O. Box 22168

Tampa, FL 33622

Legal mail and money orders

Inmate’s Name and Jail Jacket #

Northern Neck Regional Jail

P.O. Box 1060

How to address your mail

  • Write the person’s full legal name and jail jacket number on the envelope.
  • Include your full return address. Mail without a return address may be rejected.
  • Send personal mail to the Securus DMC address above, not to the jail. Legal mail and money orders go to the separate legal-mail box shown above, not to the Securus address and not to the administrative box.

What you can and cannot send

  • Allowed: letters and plain photographs.
  • Not allowed: cash, stamps, stickers, cards with glitter or tape, or anything that could hide contraband.
  • Books and magazines cannot be sent from outside the facility. See the Books & Magazines topic.
Inmate Telephone

People in custody can make outgoing phone calls. You cannot call in to the jail to reach someone directly. To receive calls, set up a prepaid account with the phone provider ahead of time.

How calls work

  • Calls are made by the person in custody, not received from the outside.
  • All calls are recorded, except for registered legal calls.
  • Calls have a time limit and may be unavailable during counts and lockdowns.

Set up an account to receive calls

  1. Create an account with the phone provider.
  2. Add money to the account online, by phone, or at a kiosk.
  3. Register the phone number that the person in custody will call.

Call rates and fees are set by the provider.

Property & Money

You can put money on a person’s account so they can buy items from commissary, such as snacks, hygiene products, and writing supplies. Personal property is handled separately and is returned at release.

Add money to an account

Personal property

Items a person had when booked are inventoried and stored. The jail cannot accept clothing or personal items dropped off by family unless staff specifically request them. Stored property is returned when the person is released.

Books & Magazines

NNRJ does not accept books or magazines sent from outside the facility, including orders placed by family or friends. If a person in custody wants a book, they request it inside the facility and the programs department takes care of the order.

How a person in custody gets a book

  1. The person in custody submits a request inside the facility.
  2. The request goes to the programs department, which handles the order.
Release Times

Release timing depends on court paperwork and processing, so an exact time cannot always be promised. This page explains what usually happens on release day so you can plan a pickup.

What to expect on release day

  • Releases happen after all paperwork is received and processing is complete.
  • Stored personal property is returned at release.
  • Remaining account balance is only available to be picked up during business hours, Monday through Friday.
  • Release timing is confirmed by staff on the day of release.

Planning a pickup

Because exact times vary, plan to be flexible. If you have a question about a specific release, call (804) 250-1750.

Weekenders

Some people serve their sentence on weekends or on set days, often called weekenders or intermittent confinement. A court orders this arrangement. Report on time and follow the rules to avoid losing the privilege.

Reporting

  • Report at the date and time ordered by the court.
  • Bring a valid photo ID and any paperwork the court gave you.
  • Arriving late or missing a report date may be reported to the court.

What to bring and what to leave

Bring only what is allowed. Leave valuables, extra clothing, and personal items at home.

Funeral Attendance

We understand that losing a loved one is hard. In some cases a person in custody may request to attend the funeral of an immediate family member. Requests are reviewed case by case and are not guaranteed.

How to request attendance

The person in custody must request a furlough through each jurisdiction they are being held for.
